LIRNEasia media comment on vanished tsunami
An article by Chanuka Wattegama (LIRNEasia’s Organizational Development Director) entitled “Lessons from the ‘vanished’ tsunami” was published in Sri Lanka’s The Nation newspaper. Wattegama considers responses to the latest false Pacific Tsunami warning on 12 September and observes that national level risk mitigation and evacuation plans were full of pitfalls and mismanagement.

Since the deadly 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, LIRNEasia has been working to analyse disaster warning systems and the required institutional framework that is needed to set it up effectively (see concept paper “National Early Warning System: Sri Lanka, NEWS:SL“). These efforts also led LIRNEasia to create the Tsunami Memorial Research Fund (TMRF), which has been used to fund further disaster-related projects and activities. Its main commitment is to give quickly and efficient responds to demands in the disaster warning space.

In order to explore the suitability of ICTs to be used appropriately to warnings in advance of potential hazards in Sri Lanka, LIRNEasia is also conducting the Evaluating Last-Mile Hazard Information Dissemination (HazInfo), which is experimental research to evaluate the role played by a number of factors that contribute to the design of an effective last mile hazard information dissemination system.
LIRNEasia is organising a panel session entitled “Making Communities Disaster Resilient” that will take place during the 3rd Global Knowledge Conference (GK3), which will be held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from 11-13 December.
