LIRNEasia’s Executive Director, Rohan Samarajiva, will speak at the Telecoms World South Asia 2008, being held from 7-9 October 2008 at the Radisson Water Garden, in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

On the first day of the conference, Professor Samarajiva as an invited session speaker will present “Introducing broadband: investment conditions, regulatory challenges and addressing QoS.” He will also make a presentation on “Leveraging on next generation technologies to extend the service offering” as a panelist speaker in the afternoon session.

Chanuka Wattegama, Organizational Development Director of LIRNEasia, will participate in the following two sessions at a World Bank workshop on “Enabling Disaster Risk Management in the Information Age”, 8-9 October, Washington DC.

8 October, 9:30 - 11:10, Session 1: Wattegama will give a presentation for the panel: “Overview of the Role of ICT in Disaster Risk Management: Global Trends and Role of the World Bank“.
9 October, 10:30 - 12:15, Session 4: Wattegama will present in the panel: “The Role of NGO Community in Using ICT for Disaster Risk Management“.

This event is organized by the World Bank e-Development Thematic Group, a global forum and community of professionals interested in the role of ICT in development, which is open for participation by both World Bank staff and external clients and partners.

[13-15 October] Natasha Udu-gama, LIRNEasia’s HazInfo Project Dissemination Manager, will make a presentation at the Workshop Disaster Management and Space Technology - Bridging the Gap. This event is part of the Second International United Nations Platform for Space-based Information for Disaster Management and Emergency Response (UN-SPIDER), being held in Bonn, Germany.

[29-31 October 2008] The 6th Annual Caribbean Internet Forum will be held in Trinidad at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Port of Spain. The Main theme of the event is Mobile Internet for Development.

Dr. Kim Mallalieu (University of the West Indies and DIRSI member), will chair two sessions, Caribbean Innovations for the Mobile Internet, and Next Generation Policy and Regulation. Dr. Hopeton S. Dunn (Director, TPM Programme, Mona School of Business and DIRSI member), during the latter session will present, Next Generation Policy and Regulation: Key Challenges.

LIRNE.NET founder and advisor, Professor W.H. Melody, will present the conference keynote address.

[28 November 2008] The Center for Communication, Media and Information Technologies (CMI), of the Copenhagen Institute of Technology (CIT), Aalborg University, Denmark, will host its First International Conference on Converging Mobile Media on 28 November 2008. The conference is organized in cooperation with the Advanced technology network on Mobile Systems, CTiF Copenhagen, and CMI’s CAMMP Project.

This conference will offer researchers the opportunity to discuss their work on information and communication technology (ICT) regulation and policy in the South with a policy-oriented, international audience.
