LIRNEasia at Telecoms World South Asia 2008

LIRNEasia logoLIRNEasia’s Executive Director, Rohan Samarajiva, will speak at the Telecoms World South 2008, being held from 7-9 October 2008 at the Radisson Water Garden, in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

On the first day of the conference, Professor Samarajiva as an invited session speaker will present “Introducing broadband: investment conditions, regulatory challenges and addressing QoS.” He will also make a presentation on “Leveraging on next generation technologies to extend the service offering” as a panelist speaker in the afternoon session.

LIRNEasia at World Bank Workshop on Disaster Risk Management

LIRNEasia logoChanuka Wattegama, Organizational Development Director of LIRNEasia, will participate in the following two sessions at a World Bank workshop on “Enabling Disaster Risk Management in the Information Age”, 8-9 October, Washington DC.

8 October, 9:30 - 11:10, Session 1: Wattegama will give a presentation for the panel: “Overview of the Role of ICT in Disaster Risk Management: Global Trends and Role of the World Bank“.
9 October, 10:30 - 12:15, Session 4: Wattegama will present in the panel: “The Role of NGO Community in Using ICT for Disaster Risk Management“.

This event is organized by the World Bank e-Development Thematic Group, a global forum and community of professionals interested in the role of ICT in development, which is open for participation by both World Bank staff and external clients and partners.

Launch of ICT4D Andean Network

 

The Association for Progressive Communications (APC) with the support of the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) and a number of organizations working on ICT issues in the Latin American region, recently participated in a workshop in Quito, Ecuador to build up a ICT4D Andean Network - APC’s CILAC project Communication for influence in Latin America (CILAC - Andean Region), which seeks to integrate research, research communications, network-building and advocacy for affordable universal broadband.

Among other presentations, Hugo Carrion from Imaginar introduced Situación de las TIC Acceso a infraestructura en la Región Andina.

ITU TELECOM 2008 - New Generation, New Values is a key networking platform for ’s top ICT names to come together and focus on core issues relating to ICT expansion across the region. The event will take place at the IMPACT Challenger Exhibition and Convention Center in Bangkok, Thailand.

Rohan Samarajiva will chair a session on Meeting the Needs of Society, ‘Promoting Manga to the Masses: Universal for the 21st Century’.
The sesion will take place on 04 September 2008 from 11:30 - 13:00 in the Jupiter Room 4-5.

LIRNEasia at International Disaster & Risk Conference

From 25 to 29 August in Davos, Switzerland, the International Disaster and Risk Conference will be hosting the International Disaster & Risk Conference 2008- from thoughts to action. This event constitutes a week-long global gathering of 1000 participants from 100 countries.

Professor Rohan Samarajiva has been invited to make a presentation entitled, Achieving Effective Last-Mile Early Warning: Opportunities for Community-based Approaches- HazInfo Project Overview. Natasha Udu-gama will present Implementing ICTs in Last-Mile Hazard Information Dissemination Systems through Innovative Public-Private Partnerships.

During the the same session, Professor Peter Anderson of Simon Fraser University has also been invited to speak on Evaluating the Reliability and Effectiveness of Last Mile Warning Systems: The HazInfo Experience.
