LIRNEasia is organising the pre-conference event, Mobile 2.0: Beyond voice? [20-21 May 2009, Chicago, USA], for the 2009 Conference of the International Communication Association (ICA) [21-25 May 2009, Chicago, USA]. A call for papers is being issued for the pre-conference event.
Mobile phones are becoming increasingly important in bringing people into the Information Society. It is widely accepted that the inhabitants of the future household will carry mobile devices that will be capable of voice and data communication, information retrieval and forms of entertainment consumption. Mobiles are now (and will increasingly become) payment devices that can also send, process and receive voice, text as well as images; in the next few years they will also be capable of information-retrieval and publishing functions normally associated with the Internet. Through such services and applications, industry experts predict that many in emerging markets will experience the Internet, or ‘elements’ of the Internet for the first time through a mobile phone, rather than a PC; mobile payments, mobile social networking, SMS voting are just a few examples of some of these services and applications.

The University of Southern California (USC) Annenberg School for Communication research seminar by Joe Straubhaar and Jeremiah Spence (both of University of Texas at Austin) is available for online viewing.
“This talk will trace the waves of thinking in Brazil about digital inclusion in terms of social thinking, policy choices, technology choices and programs, as well as the adoption of technology at local and national levels. We will compare Brazilian thinking about digital and social inclusion with that of the U.S. and Europe. We will examine the impact of social networking in Brazil, including how it has accelerated Internet use deeper into society. We will also look at how some very new technologies, like virtual worlds, are being used to address concrete social problems like distance education for teachers.”
This talk is part of the Annenberg Research Network on International Communication speaker series.

The Center for Communication, Media and Information Technologies (CMI), of the Copenhagen Institute of Technology (CIT), Aalborg University, Denmark, will host its First International Conference on Converging Mobile Media on 28 November 2008. The Research ICT Africa (RIA!) August 2008 Policy Brief is based on the preliminary analysis of the Individual and Household ICT Survey undertaken by the network.
The policy brief provides a snapshot of ICT development in Ghana, which has not been robust despite the country having been amongst the early reformers of the African ICT sector. In spite of improvements in certain sector segments, others such as household fixed line, internet access and public telephones, need policy support to catalyse their development.

Knud Erik Skouby and Reza Tadayoni of the Center for Communication, Media and Information Technologies (CMI), in cooperation with Hugo Jost of Ascom AG, have undertaken an independent assessment of mobile broadband coverage and capacity in Denmark. CMI designed the test and Ascom has undertaken the actual measurement to test coverage and different aspects of capacity. Four networks are included in the assessment: Sonofon, TDC, Telia and 3.
