LIRNEasia at Sharing Knowledge on Disaster Warning conference

[5 March 2008] LIRNE’s Project Dissemination Manager for the Last Mile Hazard Warning System (HazInfo) project, LIRNEasia logoNatasha Udu-gama, will act as facilitator and presenter on “Methodology, Preparedness, Training and Community Organization” and “Determination of the Hazard from the National Level” from the HazInfo Sri Lanka experience at the Sharing Knowledge on Disaster Warning: Community-based Last-Mile Warning Systems conference.

Nuwan Waidyanatha, Project Manager for LIRNE’s Evaluating Last-Mile Hazard Information Dissemination in Sri Lanka project will present “Transmission of Warning to Local Levels” and “First Responder Action”. LIRNE Executive Director, Rohan Samarajiva will present “Elements of a Community-Based Warning System” and “Roles of Policy Makers, Regulators, Private Sector, & Civil Society”.

The event will take place at the Hotel Borobodur, Jakarta, Indonesia 4.

Second HazInfo Dissemination Workshop

 

LIRNEasia logo[19 Nov 07] During the second workshop on “Sharing Knowledge on Disaster Warning: Community-based Last-Mile Warning Systems,” LIRNEasia members will present and analyze the latest outcomes of the HazInfo Project. The event takes place at the Willow Room, India Habitat Centre (IHC), New Delhi; and is jointly organized by LIRNE and the All India Disaster Mitigation Institute (AIDMI) .

Professor Rohan Samarajiva, Executive Director of LIRNE, will present “Elements of a Community-Based Warning System” and “Roles of Policymakers, Regulators, Private Sector, and Civil Society.”

LIRNEasia media comment on vanished tsunami

 

LIRNEasia logoAn article by Chanuka Wattegama (LIRNE’s Organizational Development Director) entitled “Lessons from the ‘vanished’ tsunami” was published in Sri Lanka’s The Nation newspaper. Wattegama considers responses to the latest false Pacific Tsunami warning on 12 September and observes that national level risk mitigation and evacuation plans were full of pitfalls and mismanagement.
