ITU reports

 

During the ITU TELECOM ASIA 2008 (Bangkok, Thailand, 2-5 September), the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) launched the new -Pacific Telecommunication/ICT Indicators Report - “Broadband in -Pacific: Too much, too little?” The Report focuses on broadband connectivity as a vehicle for content to drive development and build a knowledge-based information society.

The ITU has also released its first statistical report on the Use of Information and Communication Technology by the World’s Children and Youth, which the ITU expects to update every four years.

LIRNEasia at ITU Telecom 2008 - New Generation, New Values

ITU TELECOM 2008 - New Generation, New Values is a key networking platform for ’s top ICT names to come together and focus on core issues relating to ICT expansion across the region. The event will take place at the IMPACT Challenger Exhibition and Convention Center in Bangkok, Thailand.

Rohan Samarajiva will chair a session on Meeting the Needs of Society, ‘Promoting Manga to the Masses: Universal Access for the 21st Century’.
The sesion will take place on 04 September 2008 from 11:30 - 13:00 in the Jupiter Room 4-5.

Resources from Global Event on Measuring the Information Society

 

Alison Gillwald, Research Director for the LINK Centre and Research ICT Africa!, and Helani Galpaya, Director of Strategic Development for LIRNEasia, both attended the recent 2008 Global Event on Measuring the Information Society in Geneva, Switzerland on 27 – 29 May. Galpaya acted as Facilitator for the session Advancing the ICT Agenda.

Gillwald presented a first glance at the data of the just completed 2008 E-access and Household Survey of 20 African countries. The presentation can be downloaded here.

DIRSI at TPM celebration of World Telecom and IS Day

DIRSI[16 May 2008] Hopeton Dunn, senior DIRSI researcher and Director of the Programme in Telecommunications Policy and ICT Management, at the Mona School of Business, University of the West Indies, will present “Ringtones of Opportunity: People, Poverty and the Possibilities of Mobile Technologies in Jamaica” at a public seminar to mark the World Telecommunications and Information Society Day (which marks the inception of ITU in 1865).
